Born 22April 1923, Bettie Page was one of six children from a poor background. She shot to fame for the twinkle in her eye, which betrayed the good girl image and gave hint to her future calling.

Having had a turbulent childhood, and with failed attempts at her first marriage and a career in teaching, Bettie decided on a fresh start in New York. She was discovered in 1950 while walking on the beach at Coney Island by Jerry Tibbs, Police Officer and most importantly, amateur photographer.

Playboy’s Playmate for January 1955, named as “Miss Pin-up Girl of the World” the same year, and widely known in media circles of the times as “the girl with the perfect figure” Bettie Page was 5’5”½ , with measurements of 36-23-35 at the height of her fame.

Bettie starred in the films Striporama, Teaserama and Varietease, but although she was screen-tested for 20th Century Fox, the studio never signed her.

(New Burlesque Times imagines the studio probably kicked their own bums concave for that one!)

This was no knock back to Bettie’s career, however. She is thought to have been photographed more times than Marilyn Monroe and Cindy Crawford combined.

Bettie Page is alive and well, and still has that famous twinkle in her eye. She keeps herself out of the glare of the spotlight these days, preserving her image in our minds forever.
